Home Made Ice Cream

When I was five we lived on a ranch
still forty miles and five years
away from electric power

We only got to eat ice cream
when the hail lay deep enough on the ground
to be scooped up in the old hand mixer

Many a hot evening in August and July
five of us sat on those hard ranch steps
looking out at the Western sky

Watching the black clouds and the grey
building and rolling our way

Silently praying our Protestant Hail Marys
four for and Dad against

Crop Insurance

Young farmer at the country dance
feeling there was nothing left to live for
with his whole crop flat-threshed by hail

Until the prettiest girl in the hall
took him outside to show it wasn't necessarily so

Next morning's pews were filled to full
with farmers praying for their crops to fail

First Sunday After The Eclipse

The first day
was changing dark to light
after that was building from it

The mud from which Adam
and his betrothed rib were made
and all they saw all made from light

That sticky stuff
at the edges of your eyes
as you blinked awake this morning
Adam's mud from God's light and love

Eclipse That

astronomers Ho and Hsi
got drunk and got the date wrong
and the emperor had their heads cut off

In 585 B.C.
A battle between Lydians and Medes
was called because of midday darkness
and they never bothered to start up again

In 413 B.C.
The navy of Athens
halted a strategic retreat
because Nicias was superstitious
and gave the army of Syracuse a win
that spelled the end of Athenian power

In 1504
Columbus knowing what was coming
wowed Jamaicans to feed him and crew

In 2024
In Austin Texas the sun went out
and a cool breeze blew the old away
and a cool breeze blew a new world in

White Bluebonnet Blessing

A white buffalo calf is a big deal
and it is said White Buffalo Woman
brought the pipe of peace to the Sioux
Relating that legend Black Elk says...
This they tell,
and whether it happened so or not I do not know;
but if you think about it, you can see that it is true

In years to come they may speak of the spring
when the white bluebonnet
brought goodness back to Texas and the USA

He tells her a story
about the time he decided to end it all

Walking home from buying the gun
he meets a woman on the street

She smiles at him as they pass

He throws the gun away
