The Fearlessness of Thomson

Audio Recordings, Environment, Nature / tagged Art & Artists, Courage, Creativity / October 25, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Being from the prairie
I have a healthy fear of forests
it is fine if they wish to tonsure a lake
but full surround is a whole other matter

I wonder if this was also true
of city pals Tom took to his home
it is hard to look nature full in the eye
while looking always over your shoulder

Whis is not to say that Tom was braver
only the frightened have feed of courage
for Tom there was nothing to stay his hand
and no veil of fear between love and stroke

Go to any gallery, brave deep any painting
and see if you can feel the way that he saw

A Dead Tree Isn’t

Audio Recordings, Environment, Nature / tagged Art & Artists, Fuel, Rebirth, sculpture, Trees, Warmth / October 7, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

A dead tree isn't

It lives in furniture and art
and the
warming of the hearth and heart

Poem inspired by the art of Gloria Lee-Shoebridge
This piece is entitled Ancient Flight Click here to see more of Gloria’s work

Georgian Bay Morning

Audio Recordings, Haiku, Travel / tagged Art & Artists / May 2, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Sometimes an artist
has to look up from her art
geese may be flying

Inscrutable

Haiku, Poems about Poetry / tagged Art & Artists / April 23, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Reaching not reaching
the heart of the Orient
syllables too few

Pickles and Poets

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Addiction, Art & Artists, Immersion / January 5, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

AA members
talk about how after
enough time in the brine
a cucumber becomes a pickle
and will never be a cucumber again

Maybe the same with poets
after enough time in the brine
of the reading and writing of rhyme
where a tumbler clicks and no way back

The Icon

Bukowski and Purdy

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Art & Artists / December 16, 2025 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Bukowski in his coffin, dead as hell
reaching for one last beer and almost making it - Allen Purdy

Purdy was not Canada's Bukowski
although he might have wished to be

You can't say that kind of shit
and "I'm sorry" at the same time

Dinner with Robert Bly

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Art & Artists / December 15, 2025 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Bly orders oysters like Hafiz and Rumi
Richest food on the menu
Swallows them whole
Offers them to all who share his table

For Irving Layton

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Art & Artists, Creativity, Expression, Identity, Music / December 10, 2025 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

For Irving Layton and his rhythmic authority

Canada is a country now
said Tom Thomson and The Group of Seven
and we don't have to paint like England

Layton's poetry says the same
although with fewer rocks and trees
and been known to swear at times
as part of the morning wake up call

Leonard Cohen learned at his knee
and we now can sing our Hallelujah

Sagrada Familia Familiar

Audio Recordings, Travel / tagged Art & Artists, Barcelona, Cathedrals, Creation, Gaudi / September 21, 2025 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

When Don Quixote was an architect
he lunged with many lances at the sky

Cloud castles may have maidens in them
to rescue your soul in rescuing them

What beauty lies in madness
lies close to the skin of the seeming sane

And what magic falls with the rain in Spain
