Sophia at Halloween

Sophia, elegant oak
in our Austin front yard
might be near three hundred
but sometimes lies about her age

Many trees at Halloween
dress up in costumes by Poe
with shadows of their limbs hands
reaching out to grab your throat

Sophia on the other hand
throws out only wrapping hugs
and "If you like I'll hold your coat"

No Ghosts

In the new lands
the new houses
have no ghosts

This is a matter
of great relief
and sadness

Sometimes when you go through hell
like Austin's relentless heat this year
it is only when the pommeling is past
that you finally allow yourself to cry

It is out-pouring a blessing today
and relief through our roof is clear

A man is coming by the afternoon
to comfort her and dry each tear

Everything returns, but what returns is not what went away - Louise Glück

I never knew she was here until she left
It was in all the papers

There were pictures, I liked her from them
got a bunch of her books, not so sure now

She won a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize
I'll have to take the judges word for it

If she came back, I'd take her to tea
where we could talk of anything - but poetry

that people will be kinder

The fear
and there are stories
that they will be far less kind

And what of the rope
you are weaving and walking

when he was sixteen

by him shooting at Russians
or by Russians shooting at him
