gratitude too much like pride
outside the rain falls

Stopping for water
dry eyes turn westward
reading the clouds

Moisture is Moisture

Moisture is moisture
is the mantra of the dryland farmer

It doesn't matter if it's snow or rain
or if a foot of one
about equals an inch of the other

He is happy enough to sit
by the window and watch it fall

And any kid that complains
they can't go outside and play
will be quick-slapped by the adage

Some years Seattle
gets more rain than London

and yet
its citizens are often seen
umbrellaless on the boulevards

When it rains in Biggar Saskatchewan
a bigger battle begins
Grass and grain sucking straws
to the slurping point
The sun trying as always to extract
far more than its fair tithe
Muddy waters swirling down drains
of gopher and badger holes
Settling through hollows of buffalo wallows
where the buffalo no longer roam
Remainders feeding underground streams
and deep raging rivers

If I put my feet or ear to the ground
I can almost understand her last poem
Almost hear the next one

Home Made Ice Cream

When I was five we lived on a ranch
still forty miles and five years
away from electric power

We only got to eat ice cream
when the hail lay deep enough on the ground
to be scooped up in the old hand mixer

Many a hot evening in August and July
five of us sat on those hard ranch steps
looking out at the Western sky

Watching the black clouds and the grey
building and rolling our way

Silently praying our Protestant Hail Marys
four for and Dad against

Does wind linger long in the rain
to quench its desert thirst

Or in the day shiver
and hurry to see the sunlight

At night does it eagerly
slip through open windows

To join us under echoing roof
and kiss our skins with
moistened lips
