Fall Again

Filled to full by drinking
from the fire hose of spring
flat-wound on the wall all winter

Full enough
to last the summer mostly
and thank the giving at Thanksgiving

But the writings on the wall – fall
year winding down hose winding up

five months of drinking from a cup

On the shortest night of this long year
below the crescent moon
there hangs a single star or single tear

If it is a star to wish upon
I wish peaceful wishes all come true
if a tear no shortage of who it could be for

Summerfallow

When the land
had earned a rest it got it

Winter gave soft blanket of snow
summer sunshine and summer rain
as it dreamed its dreams of giving again

Note for non farmers: The practice of letting the land lay fallow for a year between crops

Could I adopt a leaf in bud and cheer its birth
would be all I'd need to know of spring
Follow its green shade from dawn to dusk
all I'd need to know of summer
Marvel at the colours of its fruited wisdom
all I'd need to know of fall
And when it falls, as all must fall
act the un-grim raker
