The Re-Cremation of Sam McGee

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Robert Service, Sharing / December 11, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
There's nothing as dear to a poet's ear
as hearing the reading of another's verse
whether read by the writer or known by heart
(and by heart I mean much more than memory)

Last night when Allan served us Robert Service
we were with him on the marge of Lake Lebarge
and all felt the heat of the coal and the meat
at the mouth of the shipwreck's boiler door
all felt the joy of Sam McGee back in Tennessee

Making Up Things That Might Be True

Imagination is having to live in a dead person's future - Victoria Chang

I wish your mother father sister friend
could have been here to see this
bet they're looking down and smiling now

Oh how the ones I loved
would have loved this poem
or possibly more honestly
how would I love to share it with them
or did I just

Parent and Grandparent Stories

So many stories
in so many boxes tied
with so many strengths of string

Hero stories to inspire
Cautionary tales to prevent repeat
Funny stories to remind life can be

Stories with too much pain
or too much shame
for listener or for teller

Stories they didn't tell
and stories they wouldn't tell
all part of our story if we heard them or not

With Ghosts

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Humor, Loneliness, Sharing, Stories / September 28, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
If I was ever alone, alone
I'd go hunting for a house with ghosts

They tend to derpress the real estate prices
and add little or nothing to grocery expenses

I'm always happy to hear anyone's stories
and they must have some doozies to share

They will extend the same courtesy to me
listening to my poetry endlessly and patiently
and groaning like you did at the groanier ones

Fowl Supper

Don't call it fall
even though it happens then

Because it's all
about turkey and the trimmings
and the trimmings are community

Men had the toil and the joy
of bringing in the sheaves
Women the toil and joy
of turning them into bread and pies

In Tibet and the Southwest states
sand paintings are made and blown away
nothing is permanent so they say
nobody counts how long the feelings stay

STEALING FIRE

STEALING FIRE

The thing about love
is that you can light one from another

The reason that the gods
were so punishing to Prometheus
was because he took
the last spark of special that they had
