Once pettable hills
rows of angry hackles raise
and cows curdling graze

Between the insensate power of the engine
and the vulnerable bits of the machine
there's a pin in a sleeve of a power-take-off
A little mechanical fuse if you will
that will give its life for the greater good

You will find it on the farm
Cutting blades of a binder or a swather
hindered in their back and forthness
or an auger trying to lift grit not grain

Hear the snap of the pin shearing off
saving parts from flying off in all directions
Remove the pain replace the pin and off again

Sometimes it takes a hero to save a country too

A Krakatoa cloud
is spreading across the land
filled with blitzkrieg lightning
and hell hath no fury like it hail

buffalo bulls are sowing
and somewhere herds are growing

Four years of calves from now
the curves of one will pass the other
and you'll be happy if you've a mind to

It is hard to think long strides
with swords hacking at your ankles
and leaping forward to look back
not a skill that we've uncovered
nor likely to be around to enjoy

White hood turning gray
hail pocked like parked
at the driving range all day

Sunroof glued shut
from resting under live oak lust

Suspension creaking like the knees
of the owners getting out and in

And yet she still has all her gears
keeps family safe from Tesla fears

Likes to call them wisdom dents
and will not support mad presidents

Dear Muse, What do we do's now

From your mountain
you have seen much peace and war
with saints, tyrants, and much more
and with every age gifted verse to fit it

From here this one looks like a doozy
with faces and words painted to deceive
and new forms daily formed to disinform

Your poet flocks mill round your mountain
prey to false shepherds and real wolves

Shall we bring back Basho, no
or Ali to sting like a butterfly float like bee
or roll back sunsets cowboys have rode into

No, and no, these days call
for new forms of protest and of praise
these days have us on our knees - so please
