Palm trees are lovely
and also waters green and blue

But where in all that
can you be again reminded
that we are made of crystals too

Sometimes
in the long dark of a winter night
the Swarovski fairy will pop by
and wand each tree to crystal

Run into the streets and woods
and thank her in the slant-light dawn

before
the burning envy
of the sun cancels out the spell

The Uncertainty of Snowflakes

Today the sky is filled with flakes

so soft and large and light
so suspended in their flight
that they can't seem to decide

Back to heaven from whence they came
down to rest on a downy bed
or float forever where they are

Because Gloria needed a new word
for those brief magic shining moments

A word for when the fox was looking over her shoulder as she sketched in the woods

A word for when the pure white horse trailing black reins came thundering past her and a friend on a Snow White day

For the sunsets that cover the whole sky
double rainbows when grandmothers die
and a circular rainbow that held you and I

Sheet lightning eating its tail in a circle
Northern lights that start in a point over your head and shower around you

For the magic of weaving our bracelets when we need a reminder of magic in each of our lives and each other

Because of all this, it is now your word too

The news is filled with dying and crying
the butterflies fillet from flower to flower

If butterflies could read the news
would they also feel too heavy to fly
