Little Finnegan’s Wake

Audio Recordings / tagged Death, Determination, Dogs, Heroism, James Joyce, Literature, Loyalty, Tenacity / November 29, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
Finnegan’s Wake
is a model of travail over time

It took James Joyce 17 years to write
and might take you that long to read

Finnegan is also the name
of a little Jack Russell Terrier
who went hiking with her master
Rich Moore near Pagosa Springs Colorado

They found them seventy-two days later
on a rugged slope in the San Juan Mountains
Rich leaning dead against a yellow pine
and Finnegan still fiercely standing guard
Neither Finnegan nor Joyce knew how to give up

World hard and harder
walls and paths build
stone by stone
  in the cracks - flowers

Fear piled on pain
stone paths merge
with rock wall rise
  in the cracks - flowers

Hard days and hard nights
path of pain joins wall of fear
  in the cracks - flowers

Stone walls do not a prison make - Richard Lovelace

and bloom in our art

Courage Down the Well

Audio Recordings, Farm, Ranch Life / tagged Tenacity / January 27, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
Arthur Fisher for example
who sold the ranch to Dad
and gave me my first name
and a lake-stone ring he’d made

All alone in
the twenties dug a well by the house
lowering himself into a dark dirt shaft
that could cave him dead at any second

100 feet down, an inch at a time
and how did he get the heavy bucket up

How did he feel when he hit the capstone
picked up the pickaxe and the shovel
moved a hundred feet and started again
