Mother would sometimes stop our play and send us to visit her mother in that little white house

She may have had grand stories to tell, about her childhood in England and Ontario and her brother lost at sea, and our grandfather whom we'd never met

What was he like - were we like him - Would we want to be

It was a leap we never took, and spent afternoons in leaps more comfortable to us all - small colourd marbles over small coloured marbles in the inscrutability of Chinese Checkers

Dad nevr got a perfect hand in cribbage
though he played more games than mother or me
or most of his friends you got one

He never got struck by lightning either
though the odds are twenty times better
and it may have kept him here
many years past his stoke; trying, trying, trying

Success is a seven letter word

I have seen the lights
go on inthe eyes of the young
as lettrs and words go from fear to fun

And you play it like life, loose or tight

Small words
you can make on your own
bigger ones need
some help from your friends

Even the ones that pose as your foes

You need a ball is all

and a schoolhouse
small enough to throw it over

There is the calling out
and then the throwing over
and the catching and the tagging
and the laughing, always the laughing

There were rules, you could look them up
they were too small a part to mention here

In ancient Greece
the athlete was admired
statues raised in his honor

Olympic games every four years
the basis for the whole Greek calendar

Modern Olympics forget the Greek Ideal
of sound mind in sound body

Forget the many statues of the wise
Forget that Olympic games contained
display and competition
in poetry, in music, and in drama

In the modern Olympics every four years
a new sport is voted in
I vote to add the balance back
