Forty below in Celsius
is forty below in Fahrenheit

Suffering is often involved

In Canada they make jokes
In Russia they make poems

At these temperatures
the blood from a Russian poet
freezes on the way to the ground

They break off the icicle
and Hara-kiri it into the next stanza

Mid afternoon, mid December
American Airlines from Dallas
drops into Calgary with the snow

Soft flakes fall as we rent the car
stop as we drive north into
an Ansel Adams world

Sky pillowed gray on gray
Houses and barns and bales
covered in white powder

Trees all a-bloom with hoary frost
both sides of the coal black road

For the next hour
any picture we take with color film
would still come out black and white

Until we top the overpass and see from a
horizon that was not a horizon
the rising of a Mandarin Orange moon

The big plan slows, mists rise to meet it
droplets begin to play along the windows
My body, mostly water
falling through clouds, mostly water

I have been traveling some

The water in me comes from the limestone caverns of Austin
the rivers of Upstate New York, and
million year old glaciers in the Rockies of Alberta

The clouds have been around the world
rising and falling as river, air and sea

Quiet now, as I am
I can feel them meeting again
hear them, telling stories

afloat in a small bark boat

Turning to see the river thick with ice

My earliest memories do not have a sound track

The steppes of Canada are the steppes of Russia
Zhivago watching Lara leave ... without her song

The horse’s hooves
compressing snow to greater silence
the runners sinking softly into silence
skimming surface of silence
stretching out the notes of silence

The bells on the horse . . . . . . were there bells

Watched Dr. Zhivago last night with family
