spring in every step

I met a man I had not met
for fifty years or maybe more

Neither I nor the man I met
were the man we'd been before

I had never met the wise man
He had never met the poet

School Reunion

I went to school with supermen
all fearless and bulletproof
in hockey, football and life

They couldn't be hurt
and if there's any doubt
take two aspirin and run it out

Today their knees lock up
a golf club swing cracks a rib
one steps wrong - his leg's in a cast

They're getting more human by the day
and sometimes even at night

I blame it all on the hole in the ozone layer letting in more and more kryptonite

We were Siamese cousins
joined at the hip

So adept we never stepped
on each others toes

God the great and clumsy surgeon
has divided us

Wearing the right clothes
the scar doesn't show
but people sometimes wonder
why I walk in circles

Together we were young
and strong and very bold
and together we could drink
more beer than we could hold

We could drive home late and fast
singing every Johnny Horton song
Then fall asleep for minutes
and still answer the morning gong

We would work it out in the hot hot sun
(so easy then did the poisons yield) As we sweated bales with pitch forks
and passed gas
in a thousand acre field

The Crow

Two boys and crow at fifty yards
two shots as one the crow fell still
we laughed and ran
whose hit whose miss
two holes in head
as close as this

the life was in our eyes and skill
too far from death to understand a kill

The Golden Eagle hangs
on a string of grace
a hundred yards
to the west

I raise the 32-20
Winchester
and squeeze off
a shot

Dead hit in the breast
the string breaks and it drops

Quick voice in my head
Damn fine shot

Slow voice from my heart
Damn fool
