The Sadness of Arborists

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Ice Storm / February 22, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Knowing that
next year
their trees

will by trying
to grow leaves

on phantom limbs

Taps

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Destruction, Ice Storm, Mourning, Sadness, Trees / February 21, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

In Austin
the trees after the freeze
are either dead or in mourning

There's a dead one now
with a still-clinging trumpet vine
playing taps

Big Oak Front Yard Austin

Audio Recordings / tagged Care, Love, Tree, William Blake / February 20, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

"The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing which stands in the way ... As a man is, so he sees" - William Blake

Alejandro
and Dorsey and me
almost kissing under the tree

Sophia close to 300 lies about her age

Alejandro with the city, has tenderly spent
six hours freeing her tresses from power line distresses

Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, William singing now

Oakmagadon

Audio Recordings, Environment, Nature / tagged Destruction, Ice Storm, Mourning, Support, Texas, Trees / February 19, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Two weeks after
the once in a never before ice storm
branches are still falling from the oaks

Being branches from live oaks
the leaves which never leave are left
silvering in great piles along the streets

Hundreds of years old
Sophia shudders barer in the cold

It would take a hands-clasped minyan
chosen from the chosen ones to hug her

She looks like she needs that hug — What’s a minyan?

Snowbirds in Flight

Audio Recordings, Travel / tagged Aging, Winter / February 18, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Icicles are seldom but never not curved
given the shape of eavestroughs and all
and deaths not uncommon when they fall
Many a Canadian grown up with that threat
and each year older holding harder to living
will run from that moon as fast as they can
and not until next April will you see them again

Just Blues

Audio Recordings, News, Relationships / tagged Covid19, Death, Despair, Friendship, Sadness / February 16, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

“Nothing” the unjust man complained
“is just”(“or un-” the just rejoined
e.e. cummings

Just coughing my way thru covid

Just reading the morning news
full of earthquakes and arrogance

Just noting that the cow
(meaning the price of beef)
has jumped over the moon
and taken the lettuce with it

Just missing to the bone
my bucket brigade of joy
who have kicked it

Just not pulling off this time
that old cure for the curse

Just not feeling any better
because others got it worse

Mom & Dad on Valentines Day

Audio Recordings, Family / tagged Love, Parents, Valentine / February 14, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Valentines were for at school
cheap paper hearts twice folded

Adults never played that game
but we could all tell all the same

In loving memory of the author’s parents

Old Sappy Love Song

Audio Recordings, Nostalgia / tagged Humor, Love, Valentine / February 13, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Heart
carved in
a maple tree
weeps sweet in memory
