Behind big horses winter-haired
kids long mother-readied ready

Hot coals for the foot warmer
heavy buffalo robes for laps
parkas, wooly pants and scarves

Forty below no end of snow
and five freezing miles to go
with complaining never allowed

or at least never aloud

So what it you didn't go south for the winter

Palm trees are lovely
and also waters green and blue

But where in all that
can you be again reminded
that we are made of crystals too

Sometimes
in the long dark of a winter night
the Swarovski fairy will pop by
and wand each tree to crystal

Run into the streets and woods
and thank her in the slant-light dawn

before
the burning envy
of the sun cancels out the spell

Today the sky is filled with flakes

so soft and large and light
so suspended in their flight
that they can't seem to decide

Back to heaven from whence they came
down to rest on a downy bed
or float forever where they are

ice will always sass you back
snow keeps your secrets

Fall Again

Filled to full by drinking
from the fire hose of spring
flat-wound on the wall all winter

Full enough
to last the summer mostly
and thank the giving at Thanksgiving

But the writings on the wall – fall
year winding down hose winding up

five months of drinking from a cup

Fall in Saskatchewan
and storm windows going up

Three round holes under the flap
for the Father, Son and Holy Ghost
to enter on Sunday
and the exhaust of the Maytag’s
little gas engine to exit on Monday

Nature will be held at bay
family and guests opening a door
will close it slam-ass quick behind them

It will be that way till a warm day in May
when ladders go up windows come down
and the pagan gods rush in again

Icicles are seldom but never not curved
given the shape of eavestroughs and all
and deaths not uncommon when they fall
Many a Canadian grown up with that threat
and each year older holding harder to living
will run from that moon as fast as they can
and not until next April will you see them again

was not a good time to be a tree

Oaks old enough to be gray of hair
falling, wisdom ignored, everywhere

Let us bow our heads as they
centuries of grateful as we pray
