SACRED DANCE

SACRED DANCE

The Bushmen of the Kalahari
dance all night in a circle
dance a calf-deep trench in the sand

In a circle around the circle
sit those in need of a healing

And because it is a sacred dance
any dancer at any time may step
out of the dance and do the healing
and then return to the dance again

Knowing without knowing
that everyone is a healer sometimes
everyone needs a healing sometimes

You just keep dancing

SONG OF MY FATHER’S SONG

SONG OF MY FATHER’S SONG

I am the end of a long line
and the music plays in my head
feeling the need to sing the songs
of the silent living and the silent dead

To somehow feel and heal each one
right down to my grandfather’s son

To sing the songs of a slow gray man
who runs and runs till out of breath
chased yet by the swift dark wolves
of a long ago young mother’s death

With all the tender sores and songs
and all the stories he needed to tell
cauterized by a hard world’s fires
and the scabs of a private hell

And the part of him that I can’t touch
is the part of me that I can’t touch
the part of me I need so much

God help me to reach that note

God help me to clear my throat

FROST BITE

FROST BITE

On the prairies they know
that you have to use snow

In January on the Wood River
the laces got wet and then stiff
and could not be untied

Walked the whimpering long mile home
in one frozen skate and one warm boot
part of my foot and all my toes
numb and milky white

On the prairies they know
that you have to use snow

Too much warmth all at once
can bring the feeling rushing back
with more pain than you can stand

I have since learned
and this is the sad part
It is the same way with the heart

EAGLE ON THE MOON

EAGLE ON THE MOON

When the Eagle lands on the moon
the Indian will come back
into his power

When the mother is in pain
the children who never forgot
will remind

They will have the medicine
to heal her wounds
They will sit with her while
strength returns

And the children who forgot
will remember

and bring flowers
