Fall

Audio Recordings, Haiku, Nature / tagged Autumn, Seasons / November 22, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Dry winds hurry
little brown leaf-birds along
November streets

A Frosty Morning

Audio Recordings, Nature, Poems about Poetry / tagged Autumn, Choices, Decisions, Dreams, Fall, Robert Frost / November 21, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
two roads diverged and me taking both

In waking and in sleeping
through the thicket that lies between
if-pods on dream cycles forth and back

And so much easier as winter comes
and almost all the leaves have fallen

Prairie Wool

Audio Recordings, Environment, Farm, Nature, Ranch Life / tagged Autumn, Preparation, Seasons, Winter / November 18, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The northern days grow short
The horses are all hairing-up

The hills pull scarf and shawl
of prairie wool, alpaca soft,
round their necks and shoulders

Winter's heading for the ranch
and woe to those not ready

Fall Retreat

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Autumn, Cold, Humor / October 30, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Lilliputian army
wind at back in full attack

Rust-edged swords
at unarmored ankles flailing
harries me to any door that opens

Falling

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Autumn, Seasons, Trees / October 29, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Fall again and leaves
every day deciding to go or stay

Until even the most coy sees the joy
is with the gone at the party on the lawn
Lets the wind blow up her skirts and flirts
to
the
ground

Falling Upward

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Autumn, Seasons, Trees / October 28, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Mini whirlwind twirls
its way along
October street

One last chance
for leaves
to return to trees

Canada Geese

Audio Recordings, Farm, Ranch Life / tagged Autumn, Guns, Harvest, Hunting / October 11, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The veeing geese fly freer now
across the autumn sky

No longer do they gorge
on my father's golden grain

No longer do I lie in wait
twelve gauge at the ready
to bring them in for dinner

Blind

Audio Recordings, Farm, Ranch Life / tagged Autumn, Birds, Fall, Hunting, Migration / October 10, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Lying on our backs in shallow graves
we've dug in pre-dawn frozen dirt

Golden straw pulled over us
to not be seen by Canada's geese
stopping for breakfast going to Texas

Waiting less time than it seems
to hear the honking and leap up
to exact our tithes on the grain
we and the gods all year provided

Fall Again

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Autumn, Inspiration, Seasons, Winter / November 19, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Filled to full by drinking
from the fire hose of spring
flat-wound on the wall all winter

Full enough
to last the summer mostly
and thank the giving at Thanksgiving

But the writings on the wall – fall
year winding down hose winding up

five months of drinking from a cup

Thanksgiving Poem: How-to

Audio Recordings, Nature, Poems about Poetry / tagged Art & Artists, Autumn, Fall, Gratitude, Holiday, Thanksgiving / October 9, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Don’t write right away, but soon.
Watch the leaves and the light fully
Connect – allow – relax – delight.
Too quick is a tourist in a selfie,
Taj Mahal untended over left shoulder.
Wait too long and the phone will ring

Write a few hundred poems before – good and bad,
so fear of the water doesn’t keep you on shore
And how about a title throwing two shadows
(as Mary Oliver encourages)
an easy one here with movement and the season

Do not say leaves look toward the sun, an object,
but towards the rising of the sun, an event
one more evocative of motion

Note the angle of the sun,
so low on the horizon that is shines upwards
into the twisting, twirling, falling leaves,
as they lift at times in slightly gusting breeze

If pirouetting is what you see, bring the ballet in

And gratitude, of course, and on what day
