Goodnight Marilyn

Audio Recordings, Relationships / tagged Death, Elvis Presley, Heroes, Idols, James Dean, Jesus Christ, John Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Profit, Robert Kennedy / September 9, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Dyin ain't easy but it's a living

Heroes will be expected to die young
to keep their fans from growing old
and will be well rewarded
in unspendable gold

If it’s sex you give then sex it pays
so take along the two young Ks

Though a frozen-instant Porsche crash
could be worth a lot of cash

And the Colonel smiles as money piles
for haunting supermarket aisles

But for biggest gross and longest run
it’s still the cross at thirty one

Dark Eyed Lady

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry, Relationships / August 19, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

An instant connection
with riches and light
that's deep than centuries
and warmer than life

Though if death's darkness
is as welcoming as this
no wonder people hurry
to sink into that bliss

And though I'm pretty sure
I'm not ready to be dead
I'd like to sit by those waters
and rest my weary head

And drop pebbles of my poetry
just to watch the ripples spread

Ode to a Dying Rose

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry, Relationships / tagged Death, Life / August 18, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

If poems could not
be written about love and death
the shelves would be lighter for it

How much lighter you ask

How about empty

Grandfather’s Pipe

Audio Recordings, Family, Nostalgia, Relationships, Remembering / August 9, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Long after he had died
I used to smoke my grandfather's pipe

Not really one of his old pipes
but a knobby meerschaum that I had bought
probably because it reminded me of him
the sweetness of his tobacco and his being
At least it reminds me of them now
Or was it him smoking it and me

To The Zoo

Audio Recordings, Family, Relationships, Remembering / August 7, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

I went to the zoo with you
I went to the zoo with you

There were lions and tigers and elephants
and cotton candy too

but I went to the zoo with your
with you, with you, with you

Chivalry Was Not Dead But Damp

Audio Recordings, Relationships / July 30, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

It was a dark and stormy knight
that led his lame horse
through winter wet and counted out his woes

An unending driz
ran down his rusty helmet
and burned and blurred his visored eyes

He was as cross as the frayed cross on his tunic
and swearing oaths at all the oaths he'd sworn

Damsels, damn all damsels
their gratitude had seldom lasted
beyond the ride back to the castle

Today he felt more kinship with the dragon
and would have fain laid down his sword
at the mouth of any breath-warmed cave

Three Draft Horses

Audio Recordings, Family, Farm, Poems about Poetry, Ranch Life, Relationships / tagged Horses / July 29, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

On the ranch, ride before you walk
with big sister's brave behind my scared

Grandfather's big Clyde, top as wide as a table

The jackhammer hoofed plug at Al's in Idaho
while Dorsey gets to ride the silk-paced Arab
Chilalry is not dead, but it has a sore ass

May they all chomp
the hay of heaven while I flesh them

Go Gently

Audio Recordings, Farm, Ranch Life, Relationships / July 27, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

When you break horses and break land
you end up with broken horses and broken land
When you approach
with the reverence of a listening friend
It is amazing how far they are willing to carry you

Grandpa and Hilda and the Snake

Audio Recordings, Family, Relationships, Travel / tagged Fate / July 13, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

In Brazil our grandfather at about twelve
quick precise and fresh from Switzerland
leaps up and kills a venomous snake
just as it is set to strike a four year old girl
In awe and gratitude she says
I'm going to marry you when I grow up
He moves to far-away Canada
marries, has seven children, wife dies young
raises children, sells the farm, retires to Brazil
She was still there - you can guess the rest
