Black Hills of Dakota

Audio Recordings, Environment / tagged Betrayal, First Nations / June 8, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The red man mines his life for irony
while the white man tears the earth for iron

But treaties protect the sacred stones
as long as rivers flow and grass grow
Paper covers rock
in the Black Hills of Dakota

Gold in the Black Hills, end of treaty
Scissors cut paper
in the Black Hills of Dakota

But sacred stones outlive them all
Rock breaks scissors
in the Black Hills of Dakota

Travel

Travel / June 7, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Packing
again in a place I love
for a place that I might like

Taurus roots
crab-grass to the ground

Each tearing tendril cursing
and wanting if it could
to kick
whoever made this bucket list

Hermits Notwithstanding

Relationships / June 6, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Hermits notwithstanding
we are linkage craving critters

No matter how burned our tentacle tips
we cool them a while and reach out again

for people like you to balm ease the pain

The Jester

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Politics / June 5, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

For Them the World Poet

Only the jester dares
to tell the truth to the king
to hold the blade as a mirror
and thrust to the heart of the thing

And yet he has learned to retreat
as fast as a smile might fade
sit with his back to the stone
and polish the blade

Still Life with Fear

Uncategorized / tagged Limits / June 4, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

On tripod firm
the camera rests
with open shutter
waiting

No steps are taken
or mistaken
No wounds opened
or reopened
No dice rolled
no chances taken

Still Missing

Still missing Georgian Bay Every day farther away

150 Shades

Uncategorized / June 1, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

A hundred and fifty shades
of County Grey on Georgian Bay

There’s a dog now by the dock

Like other dogs
she does not see colors well

Unlike other dogs
she lives where beauty has no need

Missing Georgian Bay

Missing Georgian Bay
With its many shades of grey
And a million years a day

In the Mountain Parks

Nature, Travel / May 30, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The beaver does not bother
to stop his building long enough
to slap his tail and dive

The black bear ambles unconcerned
along the flowered motorway
across from the great glacier

You want to be, at least for a day
that mountain goat
hanging impossibly on the slope

I want to be the bighorn sheep
that just passed four feet away
the one with the biggest horns

Shooting a Raven in Golf

Uncategorized / May 29, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Never mind your birdies and eagles and such
what do you call a perfect drive
on the first at Banff Springs
that a big black bird beaks up and swifts away

He might drop it in the hole flying by
or you mighta had a rifle in your bag that day

the scoring would, or should, come out the same
