When the Storms Came

Audio Recordings, Relationships / September 12, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

When the storms came
and I started them I hid

When the storms came
and you started them I ran

When the storms came
and the world started them
I ran to you and hid

9-11 (September)

Eighteen years later – children still asking why

Kenny and Me

Audio Recordings, Cowboy Poetry, Farm, Ranch Life, Relationships, Remembering / tagged Beer, Harvest, Youth / September 10, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Ranching at Eighteen
Together we were young
and strong and very bold
and together we could drink
more beer than we could hold

We could drive home late and fast
singing every Johnny Horton song
Then fall asleep for minutes
and still answer the morning gong

We would work it out in the hot hot sun
(so easy then did the poisons yield)
As we sweated bales with pitch forks
and passed gas
in a thousand acre field

New Hay

Farm, Nature, Nostalgia, Ranch Life / tagged Harvest / September 9, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The scent of hay
thrown upward in the cutting

Too rich and heavy to remain aloft
falls back to lie among its fallen friends

Walk shuffling small feet through it
and it lifts again in clouds to nostrils

Breathed in sweet particles remain
I do believe … there’s some there yet

Learning from Grandparents

Audio Recordings, Nostalgia, Relationships / tagged Family, grandparents, Grandparents Day / September 8, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

From my Swiss grandfather
who dreamed and grew a prairie Eden
combining Europe and Hy-Brasil
I learned the impossible is possible

From my English grandmother
I learned that niceness is very nice
but you can leave feeling empty
except for cookies and milk

From my father’s mother
and my mother’s father
I learned that early death
is a form of theft

Communism is dead
the day the leader
gets two crusts of bread

Edible Books

Nostalgia, Poems about Poetry / tagged Literature, reading / September 6, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Don't ask me who's influenced me. A lion is made up
of the lambs he's digested, and I've been reading all
my life. - Giorgos Seferis

A hut may be a granary, a mansion a desert

Where are the books piled Dagwood deep
Where does your mother read you to sleep

Where do the mangos of the South
and the spices of the East mix in feast

Good Advice

Cowboy Poetry, Ranch Life, Relationships / September 5, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Whenever anything got broke or lost
Kim’s mother would always say:
Don’t cry over anything that can’t cry over you

Which is a good thing to remember
when your life becomes a country song
and your dog, and your wife
and your truck are gone

Your dog will miss you right away
and cry with the coyotes all the night
your wife will miss you later – maybe
and cry for all the coulda’s that might

but you’re sadly mistaken
if you think that old C-10 Chevy
following the repo truck down the lane
is going to miss you half as much as you miss it
