The Gift Horse

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Gratitude / May 18, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

It is not so simple

If you question every action
you will find forces pull in other directions

If you look in the mouth of the horse
not all teeth will be straight
and many may have been grinding
for some time

It is more likely
that happiness will be found
by looking deep in the mouth of the adage

Gifts

Audio Recordings, Personal Growth, Poems about Poetry / May 17, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

There is a settling rising
There is a richness and a heaviness
in the words and gifts
There is the gold polished by the sand
heavy in the sluices
Pulling my hands upwards
against its weight

The Gift of Giving

Audio Recordings, Relationships / tagged Generosity / May 16, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Who would want to see
Santa carrying his full sack back
every chimney and all doors blocked

The rivers of the earth all dammed

Greeting card companies out of business

Chefs dying of the hunger to feed

not having the power of Jesus
to multiply the multitudes and
get rid of all that fish

The Quilt

Audio Recordings, Personal Growth, Relationships / May 15, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

for Meri Walker

You make it using
materials from all your old garments

Clothes that you have worn
for weddings, vacations, births and deaths
all the best days of your life and all the worst

When you give the gift, your friend says
“Thank you, this is perfect
it is sometimes very cold
where I am living at present
and this will get me through the winter”

Gracelets

Audio Recordings, Nature, Poems about Poetry / tagged Beauty, Grace, Magic / May 14, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Because Gloria needed a new word
for those brief shining moments

A word for when the fox was looking over
her shoulder as she sketched in the woods
A word for when the pure white horse
trailing black reins came thundering
past her and a friend on a snow white day
For the sunsets that cover the whole sky
double rainbows when grandmothers die
and a circular rainbow that held you and I
Sheet lighting eating its tail in a circle
Northern lights that start at a point over your head and shower all around you
For the magic of weaving our bracelets when we need a reminder of magic in each of our lives and each other
Because of all this, it is now your word too
Thank you Gloria

Lake Louise to Jasper

Audio Recordings, Nature, Poems about Poetry, Travel / tagged Alberta, Rocky Mountains / May 13, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Poet
struck dumb
by
the folly
of throwing
a word against a mountain

In the Mountain Parks

Audio Recordings, Nature, Travel / tagged Alberta, Banff, Lake Louise, Rocky Mountains / May 12, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The beaver does not bother
to stop his building long enough
to slap his tail and dive

The black bear ambles unconcerned
along the flowered motorway
across from the great glacier

You want to be, at least for a day
that mountain goat
hanging impossibly on the slope

I want to be the bighorn sheep
that just passed four feet away
the one with the biggest horns

Athabasca

Audio Recordings, Environment, Nature, Travel / tagged Alberta, Climate Change, Global Warming, Mountains / May 11, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Along the Icefields Parkway
(prettiest road in the world)
winding from Lake Louise to Jasper
lies a glacier that feeds three oceans
(Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic)

It takes a hundred years for a snowflake
falling on the top to make it to the bottom

Before a snowflake that falls today
finishes its journey the glacier may be gone

On the other side of the road in spring
water falls down a long face of rock
They call it the weeping wall
it may still be there

The Faith of a Mustard Field

Audio Recordings, Farm / tagged Faith / May 9, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; Matthew 17:20
In the holy land of Saskatchewan
with the faith that’s needed to be a farmer

And wanting a level place to grow his crop
he moved all the mountains to Alberta
