One of the reasons I got out of ranching
was the long drought of good conversation

Cowhands
true to their fame are men of few words

Horses ain't bad
they will at least point their ears and pretend

But cows, it was the cows that did it
how they'd saucer eye like listening
while you chewed them out in detail
about all the dumb things that they'd done

Turn away to ruminate upon the lesson
and two days later kick you for no reason

Working on a few lines just in case

Sure would be good to see
Mooney and the old gang again
and I'm pretty sure that they got in

The outhouse was
a hundred paces from the door
twice as long in winter

Language to describe the trip
as colourful as the orange wrappers
a seasonal break from catalogue pages

The pace of our trips
dependent on diet or minor disease
we even had some words for these
worthy enough to be a title of a poem

The doggerel ate my homework
and threw it up on the China rug

Just so you'd know I wouldn't lie
I picked up the bits and let them dry
and sorted them the best I could
though they now don't rhyme so good

I'm not expecting to get an A in lit
how about one for effort makin em fit

If the physicists are right
we may share molecules
with all those who went before
like Shakespeare, Socrates,
Cervantes and Tagore

It has been suggested from time to time
that I would be well to go on a diet
but it would feel too much
like parting with old friends
