All week
long our protons
pulled this way and that
by the magnets of the world

Sitting soft
on a hard pew
almost any Sunday
the first chord of a hymn
snaps them back in line again

It took Antoni Gaudi to see
that if a tree can be a cathedral
a cathedral can also be a tree

That is still stands is proof
that the branches from its trunks
can hold the canopy of the roof

It is trite and true to say
that Gaudi build poetry

and I'd love to build a poem
where one could come and sit

as softly on a hardwood pew
in a place so radiant lit

rustle their skirts round their knobbly knees

Fall falling
we hosted great flocks
on their long way south

Blizzards of snow geese
and ducks and cranes a-clatter

Grain left behind the combine
topping their tanks with premium

We'll welcome them again in Spring
callings calmed to a Texas drawl

Of Bears and Love

You could draw a hundred mile circle
around our Saskatchewan ranch
and not find a bear anywhere

And yet, there was always a bear

Chasing me
chasing me through my dreams
until I fell, always fell, into a well
and awoke still falling

They say, in falling dreams
you die if you hit the bottom before waking

That was when I was four
I don't dream that dream anymore

Yet when I find myself falling in love with tumbling down and down into love
that old bear is still there

And the fear to let go and hit bottom

through leg, saddle and spine
to a headache in a Stetson hat

Hardened by the semi
permafrost of prairie winter

Flexible as knowing
drought and rain and pain
that have come and gone
and might come back again
