Visitation

Audio Recordings, Relationships, Remembering / tagged Friendship, Grace, Grief, Memorial, serendipity / June 6, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Between an angel and a dragonfly
there is no difference by scale

One
or the other circled
all the planting of the tree
that will be fed by Sharon's ashes.

Memorial sharing for Sharon Stuart; fellow poet, fellow traveler, held last Sunday in San Marcos Texas.

Echoes Fading

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry, Relationships / tagged Friendship, Grief / June 5, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

another one for Sharon
Another poem today
and you not there to share

Now answer to my whisper
and no answer to my shout

The box canyon's had the end blown out

Dearly Not Departed

Audio Recordings, Relationships, Remembering / June 4, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

for Sharon

I have a picture
not taken by a camera

Of you
in a white peasant blouse
standing in a field of bluebonnets

Any time I take it out will be spring

Wisdom

Audio Recordings, Personal Growth, Poems about Poetry, Relationships / May 31, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

I met a man I had not met
for fifty years or maybe more

Neither I nor the man I met
were the man we’d met before

I had never met the wise man
He had never met the poet

For Archbishop James Weisgerber; aka Father Jim during years at Athol Murray’s Notre Dame College

Survival Groups

Audio Recordings, Family, Farm, Ranch Life, Relationships / tagged Adversity, Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, Community, Pioneers, Survival, War / May 27, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Small and tight and all their might
to make sure the group survives
knowing that if it don’t they won’t

A family on a prairie farm
an army unit in a shooting war

A group of boys in a Wilcox shack
a load of coal from death by frost

No reunions like their reunions

School Reunion

Audio Recordings, Relationships / tagged Aging, Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, Friendship, School, Sports / May 26, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

I went to school with supermen
all fearless and bulletproof
in hockey, football and life

They couldn’t be hurt
and if there was any doubt
take two aspirin and run it out

Today their knees lock up
a golf club swing cracks a rib
one steps wrong - his leg’s in a cast

They’re getting more human by the day
and sometimes even at night

I blame it all on the hole in the ozone
letting in more and more kryptonite

Dogs and Boys

Audio Recordings, Relationships / tagged Dogs, History, Love, pets / May 16, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Twenty thousand years
they walked the plains together

The boy did not know that
The dog did not know that

Or did they

A Manx’s Tale

Audio Recordings, Family, Relationships / tagged Cats, Death / May 14, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

There’s nothing as strong or as fragile as life
And nothing as soft as a kitten’s purr

And I’m awake and I’m sad and it’s three in the morning
And it’s mothers day and she doesn’t even live in kittens

She and Jane would curl up together while I stayed
up and wrote or worked or worried
Later I’d slip quietly into the warmth of
steady breathing and the soft blanket
of sound it rested on

In the night (not fickle but generous) she would go
from bed to bed and bring to each of the children the
comfort they might need
and lay down the same soft cushions
for their sweet dreams

I don’t know what her life was or where it’s gone or
how to say thanks, and I can’t sleep

It’s two days now since she’s been around
and the bedroom echoes
with the absence of her sound

Good Advice

Audio Recordings, Ranch Life, Relationships / tagged Country Music, Humor, Wisdom / May 13, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Whenever anything got broke or lost
Kim's mother would say:
Don't cry over anything that can't cry over you

Which is a good thing to remember
when your life becomes a country song
and your dog and your wife and your truck are gone
Your dog will miss you right away and cry with the coyotes all the night
your wife will miss you later - maybe and cry for all the coulda's that might

buy you're sadly mistaken
if you think that old C-10 Chevy
following the repo truck down the lane
is going to miss you half as much as you miss it

Marhesha’s Dream

Audio Recordings, Personal Growth, Relationships / tagged Adversity, Dreams, Humor, Learning / May 11, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

She opens a door
into a huge domed stadium filled with men
women and children, in costumes of all the ages
She knows that they are all there for her
to set up any drama at any time
to learn any lesson she needs to learn

She closes the door
and walks down the corridor

Another door to a storage closet
Inside big barrels labeled
"Plot Thickner"
