the stillness of hummingbird
and motion at the heart of stone

The love that holds
and the love that allows

The soft wisdom of sheep
and meaning in moon and stars

Flouring her hands
she kneads the poem and the bread

Shapes them with centuries
of deep woman knowing

Leans down
and kisses the rising loaf

People are taking
each other's lives and their own

The threat of hell
for either no longer seems to deter
nor empty plots in consecrated ground

Friends of ours are being shot at
another has taken the gas pipe exit

It is early on a Friday morning
I don't know how to end this poem

If I was ever alone, alone
I'd go hunting for a house with ghosts

They tend to derpress the real estate prices
and add little or nothing to grocery expenses

I'm always happy to hear anyone's stories
and they must have some doozies to share

They will extend the same courtesy to me
listening to my poetry endlessly and patiently
and groaning like you did at the groanier ones

Pulling Pipe

Trouble down the well
and me, my dad and my brothers
are Texas roughnecks

pulling, spinning and stacking pipe
pipe and rod and "Careful dammit!
If you drop that rod the well is shot"

We're Red Adair, fighting a fire
we're wet and muddy and cold and made
and we've got to get it done by dark

The gold down there's not black but red
and iron rich sea hiding away
from the pulling power of the prairie sun

Looking back fifty years from a poet's perch

I pull, spin and stack
metaphor and meaining

Back then it was just men
doing what they had to do

and white-faced cattle waiting

my father’s initials carved
Dick and Jane and Spot
ran in place on the page
and hadn’t moved in thirty years

Same olde English poets preached
as tight arsed as we in our desks
of olde wrought iron and olde wood

Had someone sneaked
some leaping Spanish poets in
the rusting bolts
might not have held desk to floor
