John Deere

After a poetry reading down in Texas
a couple of smart successful executive types who seemed to like what they came to hear are buying me a long necked beer

While searching for a common thread that between us there might be
we discovered that it's none other than a John Deere model 'D'

So we talk about the good old days
all growing up and farming wheat
and that old slow two cylinder's whump whump heartbeat

All marveling and remembering how you could stand on one all day
and still be fresh and ready to go out all night and play

We agreed at the time we weren't sure why
although I think I've got if figured now
and because of the kind of a guy I am
I'll gladly tell you now

You see

A little while back I run across a group
advertising a marvelous breakthrough
a mind improvement program teaching something completely new

If you give them a few hundred dollars
and about the best part of a year
they will take you from Beta to Alpha
relaxed as any guru and wise as any seer

So I buy all of their expensive gear
put those tiny speakers in each ear
and darned if I don't hear

Today I didn't go jogging
or send a check to any needy cause
do anything much to my teeth or hair
that the product sellers said I should

or any of the million things
I'm told I need to do to be a better me

There is a man
in the high mountains of India
who sits beside a waterfall all day
and says to God:

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
good work, good work, good work

I had a few moments of that

The small round Rinpoche at Esalen
was teaching Tibetan compassion

Start from where you are he said
feel the love you feel for one or two
or the people nearest dearest to you

Holding that feeling indiluted
add one more and then one more
til you start to feel the feeling fade
then pull back in til you feel it again

Sit with this today all day
and tomorrow try to add another
and if that works then add another
til every man becomes your brother

though keen
receive but half a scent

How many years
til it be doubled by memory

Beyond the maps of the ancient world
There be dragons
Beyond the ways of parents and peers
There be dragons
Beyond the days of preachers and of teachers
There be dragons
Beyond where you know or have dared to go
There be dragons
A toe tip, a step, and a stride
Heart, arm and sword
steeled by the fiery breath
How sweet the dragon's meat
and the maiden's
Another mark on another map
Here be dead dragons

Is it the covering
or uncovering of the sun
that you believe in mostly

Do you go quiet as a bird
fold your web like a Mexican spider
treat the omen as the end of your reign
or be the one to sit on the vacated throne

Stadiums along the path in America
were filled with people cheering
when the sun left and when it returned
while the winners sold hot dogs to them all

A white buffalo calf is a big deal
and it is said White Buffalo Woman
brought the pipe of peace to the Sioux
Relating that legend Black Elk says...
This they tell,
and whether it happened so or not I do not know;
but if you think about it, you can see that it is true

In years to come they may speak of the spring
when the white bluebonnet
brought goodness back to Texas and the USA
