GOSPEL
I want to write a gospel poem
that works just like a
gospel song
Like one of those
getting’ up by
getting’ down
songs
One of those
I may be a slave
in a thousand ways
but I’m free as long as
I’m singing this song
kind of song

THE POETRY READING
The secret to hauling horses
is to step on the gas fast
hit the brakes hard
then the gas
again
A few rounds of that
and their feet
are far apart
and well set
You can pretty much
do what you like
for the rest of the trip
THE PRICE OF PURITY
Whole grain in the granary
plenty of rocks to grind it
Take a wagon-load to town
get enough money to buy
three bags of white flour
Fast forward fifty years
Whole Foods sells brown
for the price of the wagon
EAGLE-EYE AT EIGHTEEN
The Golden Eagle hangs
on a string of grace
a hundred yards
to the west
I raise the 32-20
Winchester
and squeeze off
a shot
Dead hit in the breast
the string breaks and it drops
Quick voice in my head
Damn fine shot
Slow voice from my heart
Damn fool
AN OLD RECIPE
When the getting into of drawers
while still a great pleasure
has ceased to be
an obsession
There still remains
(perhaps the best)
The loving spoon
and the cupping
of a breast
S*P*A*C*E
Speak no more
of quarks and charms
It is all dark matter
between you and
my arms
THE SPELL OF TEXAS
Every writers dream
moving a few
letters around
to get at sex
BEV’S BACKYARD
Reading old haiku
Mind becomes pond-still
Basho’s frog jumps in
Hundred foot oak
becomes a bonsai
GALVESTON MORNING
In slow formation
lunch boxes under their bills
pelicans off to work
HOMESTEADER’S GRAVE
Homesteader’s grave
soft blanket of November snow
white on Gray’s Elegy
