Thank You Mr. Rogers

String Too Short To Save / tagged Heroes / December 8, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Surely goodness and mercy
have followed him all the days of his life

And he shall dwell
in the house of re-runs forever

Homesteader’s Grave

Haiku, Poems about Poetry, Ranch Life, String Too Short To Save / December 7, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Homesteader's grave Soft blanket of November snow

Homesteaders’ Cabins

Farm, Ranch Life, Remembering, String Too Short To Save / December 6, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

homesteaders' cabins
ghosts of courage and hope
wind through their ribs

One For The Aunties

Family, Ranch Life / December 5, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Who midwifed my father into the world in a packing crate shack in 1912
And washed up and went home without mentioning the blessed event to the government (an no one else did either)
Forty years later he applies for a passport and finds that he doesn't exist
Until they swear on on their memory and bring him into the world again

The Austrian Uncles

Family / December 4, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Already old when I was young
revered as I would hope to be when old

Two brothers married to two sisters
of my father’s father

Great aunts
always as they’ve always been
busily bustling ‘round the house

While the uncles somehow stay
both present and out of the way

Little china cups in work-hard hands
black coffee and home brew
sipping the day away

Silver (Tongue) Anniversary

Poems about Poetry / December 3, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Celebrating 25 years since the publication of Prairie Boy’s Springtime, Neil’s first book of verse. This is the preamble to that book:

When you think about the universe
finding a way to see itself

And all the time and effort that it took
the least that we can do is look

Rhymes with Haiku

Haiku, Poems about Poetry / December 2, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Out leapt a poem
with an orange in its mouth
couldn’t spit it out

Magdalene

Audio Recordings, Relationships / tagged Jesus, Love / December 1, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Mary Magdalene lay down
with the sons of men

And knew them as sons of God

There was no sin in Magdalene
for she saw no sin in them

Dearest of all to the carpenter’s son
was the one who could see him most clear

For there was no sin in Magdalene
and she saw no sin in him

Black Friday

Driving past the homeless
on the way to the big box store

Wishing that I'd eaten less
and given more

In Gratitude For Your Life

Poems about Poetry / tagged Gratitude, Teacher / November 28, 2019 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

In memory of Dr. Marvin Kimbrough PhD
Ah Doctor Marvin, you were class in a glass
the glass is broken – class spilt everywhere
I want to believe that all is well and
all your ripples spreading forever
a part of God’s most perfect plan
and yet I also want to say
I stepped on a splinter again today
