Bears on the Rocks

Audio Recordings, Nature, Travel / tagged Rocky Mountains / September 4, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Up the stubbled cheeks
of the Canadian Rockies

A morning kiss before
they wake to show their teeth

A breath of cold mist
surprising as the surgeon’s slap

Out the window, hills
great grizzlies deep in sleep

Fir tree fur
warming humps and rumps

American Sad

Audio Recordings, Haiku / September 3, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Why so little joy
in pursuit of happiness
American sad

Hoodoos I Have Known and Loved

Audio Recordings / tagged Aging, Death, Wisdom / September 2, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Even and after
the soft stone below the hard
gets worn away by water and wind

A hoodoo can stand
for an almost, but never, forever

Until
one day
the body fails
and the great head falls
carrying its wisdom into the canyon

Cousin Wayne

Audio Recordings, Family, Ranch Life, Relationships / tagged Alcohol, Regret / August 31, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

When Wayne was thirteen
he had the finest blondest hair
and the finest features and the finest mind of all the cousins round
A city boy and cooler about everything than all of us until we took him hunting
When his first shot hit the rabbit
he ran and cried and held it till it died
At eighteen he quit school with A grades to get a jump on a job
met a girl and bragged of achievement on first date
Over achievement it turned out to be
quick marriage, quick, two children, three
Army for security, liquor for the pain
it was twenty years before I saw him again.
He was in a downstairs bar
sitting there as coarse and thick as adobe brick
I wanted to roll it all back
reach in for the lost fineness and yank it all inside out
And hold him like the rabbit when he cried
still innocent when it died

Mirages

Travel / tagged Cars / August 30, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The thing about mirages
I mean the ones on roads
the ones on deserts are all about thirst

The thing about mirages on roads
is that your tires never go flat
and the girl beside you
never moves out from under your arm

Birds of Pray

Audio Recordings, Remembering / tagged Airplanes, Collections, Ford Thunderbird, Vintage Cars / August 29, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

When burning the seeds
of wants posing as needs

arrives, as it mostly does
at ouchy-ego-economic pains
cars are still cheaper than planes

Charlie Golf Xray November Golf

Audio Recordings, Flight, Pilots, Poems about Poetry, Travel / tagged Airplane, Maule, Plane / August 27, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

STOL stands for
Short Take Off and Landing

Get off the ground
In a hundred and fifty feet
stick a landing in about the same

Looking for a metaphor

Author’s Maule M5-235 Calgary, AB Canada

November 7858 Golf

Audio Recordings, Flight, Pilots, Relationships, Travel / tagged Airplane, Cessna, Plane / August 26, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

You never forget your first

Beauty is nice, and grace
but if it is to lasting be

forgiveness is the key

Author’s first airplane, Cessna 172 Sky Harbor Airport, Phoenix, AZ

November Eight Triple One Golf

Audio Recordings, Flight, Pilots, Travel / tagged Airplane, Grand Canyon, Plane / August 25, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

May you all be blessed
by a friend such as this

A friend that will forgive
full flaps at full speed

and a mercy stop in an alfalfa field
at the cost of a belly scrape

A friend that will take you
the length of the canyon grand
west to east in the sunset’s glow
below the rim and the radar’s paint

And never whisper a word

Author’s Aero Commander 680E,
Deer Valley Airport, Phoenix, AZ

Covid Gift Haiku

Audio Recordings, Haiku, News / tagged Covid19 / August 24, 2020 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The gift of covid
agorophobics now smile
we all can’t go out
