Horse Shadows

Audio Recordings, Farm, Nostalgia, Ranch Life, Remembering / tagged Cowboys / December 2, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Horse Shadows - for Lady and Rusty

Only in western movies
men die before their horses

The rest of us old cowboys
still carry them carrying us

Austin Afternoon Tea

Audio Recordings, Nature / December 1, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Sun dappled lawn

today like yesterday
in its never the sameness

If there are messages
- there must be messages

yet today like yesterday
it is difficult to read tea leaves

still floating in a moving cup

Life & Lego

Audio Recordings, Nostalgia / tagged Childhood, Play, Simplicity / November 27, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Remember when
life and Lego were simple

You could use the blocks
the few shapes that you had
to build any world that you wanted

There were no thousand piece sets
or thousand pieces of competing news

No thousand ways, not even one
to get it wrong

Dante’s 9th Inning Stretch

Audio Recordings / tagged Baseball, Regret, Sports / October 16, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

In life there are errors
errors and regrets
and then there is baseball

The ball off the end of the glove
the errant throw, any errant throw
The running into the other fielder and the ball dropping between
The not being willing to run into the other fielder and the ball dropping between
The not tagging up at third
The easy dribble down the first base line
and knees that won't let you bend to pick
The ball that was called a strike
the strike that was called a ball
For Catholics there's Purgatory
with constant replay of regret
For baseball fans there's late October to forever

In sympathy with the 2021 Toronto Blue Jays – Best team in baseball not in the playoffs

Death of a Therapist

Audio Recordings / tagged Grief, Suicide / October 10, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Honoring World Mental Heath Day

“God in his mercy lend her grace”
Alfred Lord Tennyson The Lady of Shallot

Even the camel
eater of straw
cannot always reach
the one on his back

If we had been able to see
if she had been able to ask

Who would not have taken
a handful
to add to their lighter task

Sticks & Stones

Audio Recordings / tagged Childhood, Cruelty, Scars / October 9, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Sticks and stones can
break my bones but
words will never hurt me

People who write such piffle
are well meaning I suppose

But little do they know
of boys in their growing up
who oft welcome broken bones
as a chance to show their stones

While the words
the words are with them yet
seldom with the broken places
stronger where they set

Suburbia

Audio Recordings, Relationships / tagged Neighbors, Neighbours / October 8, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Sweet picket fences
the razor-wire of warning
gap-toothed mine not yours

A Blessing

Audio Recordings, String Too Short To Save / tagged Laughter / October 6, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

May you fall into the dimples
of the laughing Buddha

For Mary Who Loves Horses

Audio Recordings, Farm, Ranch Life, Relationships / October 5, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

I have ridden the fence line
without believing in fences
I have been one with the movement of horse
the strength and speed of horse
the grace of horse
and the soul of horse
I have been one with the wind
and the high rolling hills
and the sky
I have stepped down
with my hands filled with staples and pliers
For the welfare of cattle and neighbours
who still have the need of believing in fences

A Haiku for Robin

Audio Recordings, Haiku, Relationships / tagged Beauty, Dance / October 4, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

A pearl dropped in water
her body sends ripples
through air
