Uno Mas Para Los Muertos

Audio Recordings, Family, Relationships / tagged Ancestors, Death, memories / November 3, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Though
the tears of the dead
be without salt

It is more kind
to remember to act
in ways that bring
them joy

Dia de los Muertos for Gringos

Audio Recordings, Family, Remembering / tagged Day of the Dead, Death, Memory / November 2, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Refused a feast
on but one day a year
they nibble at our
every hour

Dia de los Muertos para Sophia

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Pruning, Survival / November 1, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

In the ice storm last spring
Sophia was dealt such a svelte

She used to be big as a village
now a third of the village is gone

We will leave food and flowers
and a stone where the branches were

Sophia at Halloween

Audio Recordings / tagged Halloween, Nature, Trees, Welcome / October 31, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Sophia, elegant oak
in our Austin front yard
might be near three hundred
but sometimes lies about her age

Many trees at Halloween
dress up in costumes by Poe
with shadows of their limbs hands
reaching out to grab your throat

Sophia on the other hand
throws out only wrapping hugs
and "If you like I'll hold your coat"

No Ghosts

Audio Recordings / tagged Emptiness, Haunting, Suburbia / October 30, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

In the new lands
the new houses
have no ghosts

This is a matter
of great relief
and sadness

Ghost of Summer Past

Audio Recordings, Environment / tagged Emotions, Leak, Repair, Roof / October 29, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Sometimes when you go through hell
like Austin's relentless heat this year
it is only when the pommeling is past
that you finally allow yourself to cry

It is out-pouring a blessing today
and relief through our roof is clear

A man is coming by the afternoon
to comfort her and dry each tear

Beauty to Beauty

For Louise

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Art & Artists, Louise Glück / October 27, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Everything returns, but what returns is not what went away - Louise Glück

I never knew she was here until she left
It was in all the papers

There were pictures, I liked her from them
got a bunch of her books, not so sure now

She won a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize
I'll have to take the judges word for it

If she came back, I'd take her to tea
where we could talk of anything - but poetry

Rivers and Bridges

Rivers and Bridges
to divide and connect

I'll meet you in the middle

Balance

Audio Recordings, Personal Growth, Relationships / October 25, 2023 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The hope
that people will be kinder
to you than you would be to them

The fear
and there are stories
that they will be far less kind

And what of the rope
you are weaving and walking
