Touch

Audio Recordings, Farm, Ranch Life / tagged Animals, Connection, Technology / October 10, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

If people didn't need petting zoos
there wouldn't be any

In the parking lot
the metal waits to take them back

Farm and Ranch Nowadays

Audio Recordings, Farm, Nostalgia, Ranch Life / October 9, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Tractors keep getting bigger
combines and chemicals too

Ranching a hundred years
a horse a saddle and a rope

Author’s Uncle Arnold on Wallis tractor, Saskatchewan 1928

Combining Before Cabs

Chaff itch down your neck
and a cold beer in your hand
great barley circle

A Dead Tree Isn’t

Audio Recordings, Environment, Nature / tagged Art & Artists, Fuel, Rebirth, sculpture, Trees, Warmth / October 7, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

A dead tree isn't

It lives in furniture and art
and the
warming of the hearth and heart

Poem inspired by the art of Gloria Lee-Shoebridge
This piece is entitled Ancient Flight Click here to see more of Gloria’s work

Live Oaks in Austin

Audio Recordings, Environment, Nature / tagged Circle of Life, Growth, Reincarnation, Trees / October 6, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

The leaves
of the live oak reincarnate quickly
as the new elbow the old off the stage

And the grim reaper
lays down his scythe and picks up a rake

Ringing In The Fall

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Autumn, Leaves, Trees / October 4, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

A girl
so beautiful in dress

It is no insult to suggest
she wait a little longer to undress

Falling

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Autumn, Letting Go, Seasons, Trees / October 3, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Fall again and leaves
every day deciding to go or stay

Until even the most coy sees the joy
is with the gone at the party on the lawn

Lets the wind blow up her skirts and flirts
to
the
ground

A Leaf in a Million

Audio Recordings, Nature / tagged Death, Life, Seasons, Trees / October 2, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

Could I adopt a leaf in bud and cheer its birth
twould be all I'd need to know of spring

Follow its green shade from dawn to dusk
all I'd need to know of summer

Marvel at the colours of its fruited wisdom
all I'd need to know of fall

And when it falls, as all must fall
act the un-grim raker

Word Divisions

Audio Recordings, Cowboy Poetry, Pilots, Poems about Poetry, Relationships / tagged Communication, Connection, Optimism / October 1, 2026 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com

You can know your native language
and still feel all alone
as pilots talk to pilots
in a code that's all their own

Yet not even one to one
can they share that love of air
or touch the other's feelings
of the fear and beauty there

Sailors talk to sailors
of wind and sail and rope
of nights upon the ocean
of courage and of hope

Yet the words just can't convey
their love of sea and air
nor touch the other's feelings
of the fear and beauty there

And though cowboys talk to cowboys
in a special kind of drawl
there's still a space between them
the words can't tell at all

Not those nights of cold and stars
with coyotes on the air
nor the call of open spaces
with the fear and beauty there

Watch as lovers talk to lovers
in ways only two can share
as they build between them
a framework light and fair

While a web that's spun of maybes
hangs so fragile in the air
that one false word can shatter
into pain, the beauty there

And yet

There are still some crazy poets
out riding hatless in the sun
still trying to do the very thing
we all know can't be done

Still Quioting for a language
that can speak to everyone
