Lahaina – A Brief History

Sometime around 1,000 AD
Tahitian settlers sailed or rowed
across two thousand miles of open sea

In 1790 Kamehameha
warrior king of the big island
landed his log canoes at Hana
came like wildfire over the mountains
and laid total waste the town of Lahaina

From then until now
it survived whalers and missionaries
and other white man’s blessings mostly intact

until winds and wires and warming wiped it out

Picture of Lahaina harbor in the mid-1800s. At the height of the whaling industry there could be up to 100 whaling ships at anchor in the Lahaina roadstead.
